The Farm at Halley Rise

Located in Reston, Virginia, The Farm at Halley Rise is a place to connect to nature, to each other, and to the origins of healthy, sustainable, local food. Opened in 2022, the Farm grows a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers.

On the Farm

We donate the produce grown on the Farm to Cornerstones, a local nonprofit that promotes self-sufficiency by providing support and advocacy for those in need of food, shelter, affordable housing, quality childcare, and other human services.

Farm Features

  • Berries, herbs and flowers! The fruit garden is filled with a variety of everyone’s favorites; such as raspberry, strawberry and blueberry bushes. The herb garden is home to culinary favorites like rosemary, thyme, chives and sage. The flowers and trees are all species native to our region and provide crucial habitat to pollinators and other beneficial organisms.

  • The rain garden is used to capture and filter stormwater, slowing down water as it flows off the surrounding land during rainfall, easing the burden on municipal sewer systems. It is filled with native plants that also provide habitat for birds, butterflies and other beneficial insects. Additionally, nearby you will find a variety of fruit trees. Peach and Plum trees encircle the rain garden, also providing fruit and valuable habitat for beneficial insects and birds.

  • The flowers and native plants in this section of the garden provide great habitat for local pollinators and other beneficial organisms. Stop by the garden and you are likely to see bees buzzing around, and butterflies floating by.

  • Each year the vegetable garden is home to a wide variety of crops, from summertime favorites like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, to hearty essentials like kale, chard, and eggplant. There are three plantings done throughout the year– an early spring planting for cooler weather crops like radish and lettuce, a summer planting which yields a bountiful harvest, and a early fall planting for hearty greens. Each winter the garden is planted in cover crop to help build back soil health.

Produce from the garden is donated to Fairfax County based organizations working to combat food insecurity as well as distributed onsite to residents and tenants.
