CG Farms July Hive Update
from beekeeper james
The hives at Capital Gateway have been looking strong through July and into August. Over the last couple of weeks, each hive has stored an impressive amount of honey! Another round of organic pest controls were applied to keep the honeybee’s major two pests–varroa mites and small hive beetles–at low, manageable levels. Your Up Top Beekeeper was able to harvest around 65 pounds of honey from the two hives, and we still left the bees with plenty of resources to continue working through the rest of the year.
With the warmer weather, I added some equipment to help the hive stay cooler and improve ventilation. The bees have been doing a good job managing the heat and keeping the hive active. Overall, these colonies are in great shape heading into the later part of summer.
Fun Fact
On a hot day, honey bees will fan their wings at the entrance of the hive to help move hot air out and bring cooler air in!
Honey Update!
The time has come for the honey to be harvested at the CG Farms hives! The worker bees have filled the frames and our team will be getting the honey processed and jarred for you soon!
