Carlyle Gateway April ‘25 Hive Update

Just buzzing by to say hi!

My name is James and I am your new Beekeeper for 2025 on the rooftop at Carlyle Gateway! At the beginning of April, our team at Up Top Acres installed a new 300 square foot raised bed garden on the underutilized ballasted roof area. Shortly after, our team installed two new bee colonies just a few feet away from the new garden. This new oasis will soon host a variety of annual vegetables, perennial herbs and flowers that will provide resources for the thousands of honeybees that now call the rooftop at Carlyle Gateway their home.

Right now, forager bees are bringing back lots of pollen and nectar from all sorts of flowering plants and trees. The queen bee is currently laying between 1,000 and 2,000 eggs per day to take advantage of the nectar flow! This past week, I put on a “honey super” where the bees will store honey and the queen will be unable to lay eggs into. This box will be where we will pull the frames from to harvest the excess honey that the bees produce!

I’m looking forward to managing the bees for the rest of the year and hope to catch some of you in the elevator on one of my visits!
